Donating a Book in Honor of National Donate a Book Day!

Every year on April 14th, book lovers across the country come together to celebrate National Donate a Book Day. It is a great initiative to help encourage people to share the gift of reading by donating books to libraries, schools, and literacy organizations. First observed in 2011, this special day was launched through a collaboration between the Book-of-the-Month Club and the Association of Library Trustees, Advocates, Friends and Foundations (ALTAFF).

As an author and lifelong reader, books have always played a major role in shaping my life and career. So this year, I decided to mark the occasion in a meaningful way: by donating a copy of my first book, Never Break the Chain, to one of the Little Free Libraries located right here in my small town in Ohio.

These Little Free Libraries—those charming, weatherproof boxes that pop up on street corners, near schools, and in front of coffee shops—offer a simple yet powerful way to spread literacy and build community. I’m fortunate that we have three of them in our town, and each one is lovingly maintained by local volunteers who believe in the power of a good book.

Here I am dropping off a copy of Never Break the Chain at the Little Free Library located at Oakwood Cemetery in Bucyrus!

Placing Never Break the Chain inside that tiny library box brought me full circle: from dreaming of being a published author to giving back to the community that helped shape that dream. I hope whoever picks it up finds inspiration in its pages—and maybe even the courage to write their own story someday.

If you have gently used books sitting on your shelves, why not join in the celebration? Whether it’s donating to a school, a public library, or one of your local Little Free Libraries, your contribution could be the spark that lights a love of reading in someone else.

Books have the power to connect us, educate us, and change lives. Today, on National Donate a Book Day, let’s pass that power on.
